The Five Slots

The standard competitive Fortnite loadout follows a well-established five-slot layout that maximizes your combat effectiveness across all phases of a match. Slot 1 is reserved for your shotgun or close-range weapon, as this is the weapon you need instant access to during building edits and box fights. Slot 2 holds your assault rifle or mid-range weapon, providing consistent damage output at the ranges where most engagements begin and end.

Slot 3 is the flex slot, typically carrying an SMG for build pressure, a sniper for long-range picks, or a mobility item depending on the current circle position and your playstyle. Slot 4 is dedicated to healing items, with shield-based heals taking priority over health recovery in most situations. Slot 5 holds your second heal stack or a mobility tool. This five-slot framework gives you the versatility to handle any combat scenario while maintaining enough healing capacity to survive the storm and extended fights.

Healing Item Priority

Not all healing items are created equal, and knowing which ones to carry and which to drop can significantly improve your survival rate. Big Shield Potions (3 per stack, 50 shield each) are the most space-efficient healing item in the game, restoring a total of 150 shield per inventory slot. They should be your top priority whenever possible. Mini Shield Potions (6 per stack, 25 shield each) offer 150 total shield per slot and are faster to consume, making them better for mid-combat healing.

Medkits restore full health but are slow to use and take up a full inventory slot. Carry them only when you anticipate taking significant health damage from the storm or prolonged fights. Floppers and Shield Fish from fishing provide instant healing without animation delay, making them incredibly valuable in competitive settings. Bandages are the least efficient healing item — they only restore up to 75 health and should be replaced with better options as soon as possible. The golden rule is to always prioritize shield over health, since shield damage is temporary and health damage is permanent until healed.

Mobility vs Extra Heals

One of the most common inventory dilemmas in Fortnite is choosing between mobility items and extra healing. Shockwave grenades are among the most versatile mobility tools in the game, allowing instant escape from dangerous situations, third parties, or storm pushes. They also provide vertical height for repositioning during end-game circles. The Grapple Blade offers unmatched vertical mobility, letting you scale cliffs and builds quickly while conserving building materials.

Flowberry Fizz provides a unique combination of shield healing over time and low-gravity mobility, effectively serving two roles in a single inventory slot. When deciding between mobility and heals, consider the current game phase: early game favors more healing, while mid-to-late game increasingly favors mobility as the circle shrinks and positioning becomes more critical than raw HP. In most scenarios, having at least one mobility item is more valuable than carrying an extra stack of minis.

Loadout by Game Phase

Your inventory should evolve throughout a match to match the demands of each game phase. In the early game, any weapons will do — prioritize maximizing your healing capacity and shield level over weapon perfection. Two or three healing stacks with whatever weapons you find will carry you through the first circle closure. In the mid-game, optimize your weapon loadout once you have access to a Mod Bench or loot from eliminated opponents. At this stage, you should have around four healing items total across all slots.

The end-game is where loadout decisions truly matter. Compact healing items like Mini Shields or Floppers become more valuable than bulky Medkits or Big Pots because they allow faster consumption during intense final circle fights. Mobility items reach their peak importance in the end-game, where positioning mistakes are instantly punished. Ideally, your late-game loadout should include one shotgun, one AR, one mobility item, and two stacks of compact heals.

Competitive Loadout Examples

Professional Fortnite players follow specific loadout templates that have been refined through thousands of tournament matches. The standard competitive loadout runs Shotgun-AR-SMG-Heals-Heals for maximum combat uptime. The Fortnite Fandom Wiki provides detailed inventory management guides used by professional teams. Wikipedia's competitive Fortnite coverage discusses how loadout strategies have evolved through different competitive formats. Some pros prefer carrying a sniper over an SMG when they have strong mechanical skills and want to secure eliminations from distance. The key is understanding the trade-off: an SMG gives you better close-range pressure and build damage, while a sniper provides one-shot elimination potential and zone control. Practice different loadout configurations in Arena mode to find what complements your natural playstyle.

If you have to choose between an extra stack of heals and shockwaves, take the shockwaves. You can always heal after repositioning — you can't reposition after dying.

Solo vs Squad Loadout Differences

Your loadout should adapt based on whether you are playing solo, duos, trios, or squads. In solos, carrying two healing stacks is often sufficient because you only need to survive against one opponent at a time. The flex slot can go to a sniper for long-range picks or a mobility item for rotation. In squads, you need more sustained healing to survive consecutive fights against multiple opponents. Consider carrying three healing stacks or a combination of heals and utility items like reboot cards and launch pads. Communication also affects loadout choices — in coordinated squads, one player can carry a sniper while another carries extra heals, effectively distributing roles across the team. Solo play demands self-sufficiency while squad play rewards specialisation, so adjust your loadout philosophy accordingly.
